Treating Bulimia:A Psychoeducational Approach
Bulimia – binge eating and purging – has increased in frequency. Prevalence for female college students ranges from 2.9% to 19%. This book presents a short term psychoeducational approach focusing on personality and behavior deficits in an effective treatment strategy for bulimia. (211 pages)
Introduction: Treating Bulimia
This chapter presents an overview of bulimia, including a description of the syndrome and its effects, as well as a review of the research findings on its etiology and treatment. The chapter also discusses the research on which the authors’ treatment program is based and the rationale for that program.
Preliminary Interview
We see our clients for an initial interview to assess if they are bulimic and to give them some information about the program. We have used the DSM III criteria to assess bulimia and to differentiate bulimic women from binge eaters and anorexics.
Week 1: Education and Overview
The first session has two purposes: to develop group cohesiveness and to provide an overview of bulimia.
Week 2: Eating as Coping
The purpose of this session is to help women identify the cues that lead to binge eating for them and to develop other responses to these cues.
Week 3: Self-Esteem, Perfectionism, and Depression
In this session, we elicit a discussion on the relationship between depression, self-esteem, and perfectionism and how they apply to both personal and weight goals.
Week 4: Anger and Assertiveness
In this session, we discuss the relationship of anger and assertiveness to binge eating.
Week 5: Cultural Expectations of Thinness
In this session, we elicit a discussion of these cultural demands for slimness and help women become aware of their feelings about these demands.
