We are a nonprofit corporation devoted to providing quality training in the theory and practice of psychotherapy, in maintaining a spirit of intellectual openness, and in incorporating community service and diverse membership throughout the Institute.

Are these books really free?

Yes. The IPI is providing these books as a service to the psychotherapy community.

All of our books are provided by agreement with their authors or representatives.   If you're looking for a specific title, contact the author and ask them to share their book with our readers.

How do I read an eBook?

Our eBooks work with any eReader. Once you've ordered the book and downloaded the PDF, you can load the file onto your eReader. Please view our ebook Management section for more details or follow the instructions that came with your eReader.

What if I want a different file type? (epub or mobi)

If you have a Kindle, and prefer a mobi file to a pdf OR if you have another e-reader including Nook, Sony, or iPad, and you prefer an epub file, we recommend using the free Calibre program to convert the PDF file.  Download Calibre for free

What if I don't have an eReader?

Choose one of the following options:

  1. You can download the PDF file to read directly on your computer screen with free Adobe Acrobat software.
  2. You can download the free Calibre software to your computer (see eBook management) and open the PDF file there.
  3. You can download an eReader app to your Smart Phone or tablet

I completed my download, where is my eBook?

*Once you've completed your request, you will need to click on the PDF download (link in orange) to start your download.*
download link

Click the link to download the file, and your eBook is automatically downloaded to your computer.

Since every computer is set up differently, you will have to determine how your computer stores downloaded files.
  • Some computers have a download folder where downloaded files are stored
  • Some computers have a Temp folder where downloaded files are stored
Using Windows:

You can find any file you've downloaded by going to your web browser (i.e. internet explorer).  Under the tools dropdown menu, there is a view downloads selection.  Clicking this will open a new dialogue box that displays all the files you've downloaded (you can also use the shortcut ctrl+J)

Or you can find the files by using Windows' start menu:

  1. Click the Start button
  2. Type the file name (book title) into the search box at the bottom of the Start menu
  3. Press enter and wait for the matching files to appear
Using Mac OS

If you are using a Mac, there is also a way to see the downloads from your internet browser.  On the far right side of the address bar, there should be a gray circle with a lighter colored down arrow inside.  Clicking that arrow will open up the list of downloads on that computer.

Or you can search for the file name (book title) in Finder:

  1. Go to Finder
  2. Type the title into the search box at the top right corner (next to the small magnifying glass)
  3. Press enter and wait for the files matching that name to appear
*** If you can't find the file after typing the full title, try using parts of the title to search

Some of our ebooks can be downloaded by the individual chapters in addition to the full version of the book. These are chapter ebooks.
