Human behavior cannot be understood apart from the environmental context in which it occurs. Physical and social environments must be studied together since neither can be fully understood without the other. Social ecology has an explicit value orientation in that it attempts to provide knowledge relevant to promoting maximally effective human functioning. (52 pp.)
