Excerpt:

Residential, inpatient, or hospital treatment refers to a comprehensive therapeutic process addressed to the adolescent whose psychopathology is of a degree that warrants his removal from his usual familial and social environments, with subsequent admission into full-time institutional care. Such treatment is reserved for those adolescents who have been unable to harness or channel their instinctual energies and hence have failed at utilizing peer and adult relationships to sustain psychosocial growth.
