The diversity of psychotherapies is more apparent than real, and that in actuality all candidates for psychotherapy suffer from a single condition that takes protean forms. This condition may be termed demoralization. Similarly, all forms of psychotherapy share certain features that combat demoralization and thereby account for most of their actual effectiveness.
