Some principal aims in this chapter are not only to outline highlights of present knowledge in psychoendocrinology, but also to point out gaps in knowledge, to present a more balanced theoretical perspective of the evolution of issues and approaches in the field, and, hopefully, to convey something of the historical sense of scientific adventure and breakthrough which has pervaded psychoendocrine research in its infancy.
