Advances in biology have greatly clarified the mechanism of regulation of the metabolism of individual cells. This in turn has set the stage for analysis of cellular sociology—how certain cells come to associate with others and how neighbors regulate each other. Solution to these problems is particularly important for an understanding of the most societal of organs, the nervous system. The goal of this essay is to provide the reader with a sampling of several selected aspects of this work. (21 pp.)
