If the goals and strategy of psychoanalysis can be simply stated and adequately painted in the sweeping strokes of generalizations, the tactics by which the goals are accomplished are impossible to convey. Generalizations describing the more common clinical problems are discussed: the selection of the patient, the preparation of the patient, the process of analysis and the evaluation of the effects of analysis.
