The concepts presented here draw on the richness of psychoanalysis, with its emphasis on early development and conflict, and the dramatic findings of family therapy, which have concentrated on here-and-now interaction. A scientific basis for theory and treatment is presented that integrates these two approaches through the use of object relations theory.  This integration will prove beneficial to family therapy, to psychoanalysis and to psychiatry, but most of all to those suffering from the pain of emotional disorders.
