Unlike other defined social roles, retirement is beset with a lack of socially defined positions and behaviors. This essay discusses population aging in industrial societies, institutionalization of pension systems, retirement roles, changing orientations toward work and retirement, ideological biases in conceptions of adjustment, criteria of adjustment, personality and types of adjustment, and satisfaction with the retirement experience.
