The hysteric poses a question: What does the tongue of that which is mute try to tell us? This question is the impelling force behind every process of creation. It awakens the wonder and curiosity of mankind. For Freud it resulted in the famous question, “What does woman want?”

Frau Emmy: From Catharsis to Psychoanalysis
This chapter examines the case study of Frau Emmy. Freud writes: “[I] can give no better advice to anyone interested in the development of catharsis into psycho-analysis than to begin with Studies on Hysteria and thus follow the path which I myself have trodden” (1895, p. xxxi). In this way we shall to some extent redress the oblivion that has fallen upon hysterical women, the wet nurses of psychoanalysis.
On Freud’s Couch: seven new interpretations of Freud’s case histories
“Matthis, Szecsödy and colleagues creatively examine seven of Freud’s major case reports to link the sources of his central discoveries to current debates in contemporary psychoanalytic theory. The ‘reexperiencing and restructuring’ of early psychoanalytic insights in contemporary terms revitalizes the discourse and invigorates the psychoanalytic enterprise for students and seasoned practitioners alike.”
Sidney J. Blatt
“Weaving together their own ideas with the findings of historians of psychoanalysis and with other psychoanalytic reanalysis of Freud’s case studies, the contributors to this very worthwhile book help us not only to understand better the origins of psychoanalysis but also to have sense of where we are today.”
Roy Schafer, Ph.D. and Rita Frankiel, Ph.D.
Finger-Twisting and Cracked Voices
Freud’s early theory -“hysterics suffer mainly from reminiscences” is moved to a modern theory of semiotics. This adds to Freud’s discovery of the symbolic meaning of bodily symptoms by drawing on the field of semiotics, the study of language and symbols.
